History

J.A. Vitovsky Elementary was built in the northwest area of the Midlothian Independent School District and opened on August 30, 2001. The campus is located at 333 Church Street approximately one block off of Highway 67 and about 1 mile from Highway 287. The school takes its name from Mrs. Jackie Vitovsky who served Midlothian ISD proudly as a school board member from
1996-1999.

When J.A. Vitovsky opened in the fall of 2001, it served all of the district's 5th and 6th graders with an average enrollment of approximately 930 students.
J.A. Vitovsky opened as a PreK - 5th grade campus for the 2005-06 school year.

J.A. Vitovsky Elementary provides a multitude of specials services for students with unique needs such as the district's bilingual program, the Title I Reading Program (STARS), and the Title I Math Program (COMETS) - just to name a few. We are very excited about all of the wonderful learning experiences to come in the future at the newly configured J.A. Vitovsky Elementary!

J.A. Vitovsky Elementary will offer a continuum of services designed to the individual needs of our students. Various instructional programs include:

- Bilingual/ESL: Our bilingual program serves students in grades PreK - 5th grade. The goal of our bilingual program is to produce students who are strong across all academic areas in both Spanish and English. Our ESL program (English as a Second Language) serves our students who are learning English as their second language.

- STARS (Strategies Toward Advancing Reading Skills): This is our Title I reading program that serves students who are identified as needing additional support in reading. These students are either pulled-out for instruction or served within the regular classroom setting.

- COMETS (Creating Opportunities in Math Education Through Teaching Strategies): This is our Title I math program that serves students who are identified as needing additional support in math. These students are either pulled-out for instruction or served within the regular classroom setting.

- RISE (Reading IS Essential): This program is an early, short term intervention program with an emphasis on using reading strategies for those children experiencing reading difficulties. The goal of this program is to develop a strong independent reader.

- Inclusion: Assistance for special students within the regular education classroom.

- Learning Lab: Assistance for all students needing additional support.

Other programs and student activities include: Gifted and Talented, Service Learning, LEAP tutoring (for extended school-day instruction), Destination Imagination, Math Pentathlon, Student Council, Safety Patrol, All-City Choir, Mission Musician Club, Art Club, and Chess Club.
