Dr. and Mrs. Jerome Stewart, members of the Midlothian Education Foundation, PTV representatives and Dale Cheek from the MISD Maintenance Department celebrated the recent the dedication of the new walking/jogging track at J.R. Irvin Elementary. Coach Ryan Timm was awarded a grant from the Midlothian Education Foundation to help make the track a reality. The J.R. Irvin PTV also contributed funds to the project. |

Kindergartners have been learning about insects. Zachary J. and Cason W. work on writing stories about the insect they created. This activity was a "Family Fun" activity to create an insect with recyclable materials. The families were to name their insects, as well as create what it eats, its enemies, where it lives, and how it moves. |

Irvin second graders created friction boards to compare surfaces with high and low friction. Students then brainstormed materials that could be used to reduce friction to help Winnie the Pooh get free from Rabbit's doorway. Chloe R., Ava H., Hannah M. and Alivia W. show off their friction boards. |

Congratulations to our World's Finest Chocolate fundraiser prize winners. Evan D. was our top seller by selling 20 cases and received a Wal-mart gift card. Ava H. and Hallee S. sold 3 or more cases and their names were drawn as winners of a Wal-mart gift card. Madison H. also sold more than 3 cases and won a 5-pound World's Finest Chocolate bar. |

J.R. Irvin Wins Bluebonnet Book Bowl Again!
Congratulations to Irvin’s Bluebonnet team who won the MISD Elementary School Bluebonnet Book Bowl competition for the 3rd year in a row!!! After a three-way tie in the final round, Team Irvin pulled out a victory in sudden death overtime. Through great teamwork and determination, Team Irvin won the right to keep the Bluebonnet Trophy engraved with their names, at Irvin for yet another year.

The students are using thier prior knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to create the tallest Ice Castle. Our First grade students are learning about Holidays Around the World. On Tuesday, we visited Sweden and experienced the light parade throughout the school. St. Lucia is the oldest girl in the family and she wears a wreath of candles on her head. She is also dressed in white with a red sash around her waist. The parade of light welcomes the holiday season. Our first graders enjoyed learning about Sweden.

The authors of R Time, Pete Harvey and Greg Sampson, came to Irvin Elementary on November 12. Pete and Greg came from England to observe R time in practice in our classrooms. Mrs. Vitullo's second grade class read the book Hedgehog Bakes a Cake. The class discussed how to make a cake and compared their list of ingredients to those in the book. With the help of Sheree Hart, the students used math skills to measure ingredients, learned that ingredients are added in a certain order and that both dry and liquid ingredients are necessary to make a cake. Once the cupcakes were done, Elijah L., Kaylee H., Alivia W., Marcus M., and Alexandria M. were able to frost and decorate them.

First grade classes participated in "Teeny, Tiny Day". The day began with the students (and teachers) entering their classroom through a teeny, tiny door. The students also played games with teeny, tiny dice. The fun continued all through the day. |

Recently, Mrs. McDaniel and some team members of the Community Problem Solving Team were awarded the opportunity to attend the Miley Cyrus concert in Dallas. They were given this opportunity by an organization called YSA (Youth Service America) because they earned a grant for their community service. Miley Cyrus has teamed up with YSA to promote youth doing community service in their towns. They got to meet Miley Cyrus backstage and had the opportunity to talk with her and tell about their service, both past and present! J.R. Irvin Kindergartners had a special "Family Project" to complete for our Transportation Unit. The students were given either a sheet of paper to make a plane or a sheet of foil to make a boat. They had a week to complete their plane or boat with their family. Last Friday, we took turns flying our planes by class to see whose plane flew the farthest. The boats were tested to see which boat held the most pennies. We had fun watching our planes soar and our boats hold a lot of pennies!!
