Dr. and Mrs. Jerome Stewart, members of the Midlothian Education Foundation, PTV representatives and Dale Cheek from the MISD Maintenance Department celebrated the recent the dedication of the new walking/jogging track at J.R. Irvin Elementary. Coach Ryan Timm was awarded a grant from the Midlothian Education Foundation to help make the track a reality. The J.R. Irvin PTV also contributed funds to the project.

J.R. Irvin students enjoyed a Rock Band concert performed by teachers and students to celebrate their success on preparing for TAKS.

Kites J.R. Irvin third graders enjoy the sun, the wind and the end of TAKS by flying kites. Students SOARed (Strategies Offer Awesome Rewards) taking the test so they were rewarded with kites to soar.

Kinder Bugs Kindergartners have been learning about insects. Zachary J. and Cason W. work on writing stories about the insect they created. This activity was a "Family Fun" activity to create an insect with recyclable materials. The families were to name their insects, as well as create what it eats, its enemies, where it lives, and how it moves.

Friction Irvin second graders created friction boards to compare surfaces with high and low friction. Students then brainstormed materials that could be used to reduce friction to help Winnie the Pooh get free from Rabbit's doorway. Chloe R., Ava H., Hannah M. and Alivia W. show off their friction boards.

Fundraiser Winners Congratulations to our World's Finest Chocolate fundraiser prize winners. Evan D. was our top seller by selling 20 cases and received a Wal-mart gift card. Ava H. and Hallee S. sold 3 or more cases and their names were drawn as winners of a Wal-mart gift card. Madison H. also sold more than 3 cases and won a 5-pound World's Finest Chocolate bar.

Marathon Kids Coach Timm and students from J.R. Irvin Elementary enjoy the Marathon Kids Final Mile Celebration for completing 26.2 miles of jogging/walking.

Pentathlon Kindergarten and first grade students competed in the Division I Math Pentathlon Tournament in Round Rock on Saturday, March 27th. Students competing were Laurie M., Simon B., Garrett M., and Aryn W. Christine Dobbins is their coach.

Green visit 3rd graders from Irvin had the privilege to meet some special visitors from Greens Pet Store. Mrs. Green let the students see many different reptiles from their store. 3rd grade is currently learning about reptiles in science.

The students who raised the highest dollar amounts for Jump Rope for Heart were able to throw a pie in the face of the faculty member of their choice. Seth F. chose to 'honor' Coach Timm with a pie in the face. Mattie S. chose to 'honor' Ms. Tidwell with a pie in the face.

BBB Winners

J.R. Irvin Wins Bluebonnet Book Bowl Again!
Congratulations to Irvin’s Bluebonnet team who won the MISD Elementary School Bluebonnet Book Bowl competition for the 3rd year in a row!!! After a three-way tie in the final round, Team Irvin pulled out a victory in sudden death overtime. Through great teamwork and determination, Team Irvin won the right to keep the Bluebonnet Trophy engraved with their names, at Irvin for yet another year.

Cartoonists1 Teamwork pays off for kindergartner Ethan W. and second grader Titus L.! They created a cartoon about a bear waking from hibernation using Toondoo.com.

Allred visit Guest speaker, Alex Allred, used a 3rd grader at Irvin Elementary to demonstrate how gravity & force can effect bobsledding. Mrs. Allred was previously on the US Olympic bobsled team.

Bear Parade Our kindergarten students enjoy showing off their teddy bear floats during the Kindergarten Teddy Bear Parade.

Spelling Bee Champ Tifani B. is the Spelling Bee Champion for Irvin Elementary. She is advancing to the County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Kirpatrick Elementary in Maypearl. The winner of the County Spelling Bee will advance to the Dallas Morning News Regional Bee in March. The next step following the Regional Bee is Washington D.C.! Congratulations Tifani!!

Ambassadors Embry's Ambassadors of Excellence are excited about dining with Mrs. Embry at Red Robin's Restaurant! These students earned this award for Perfect Attendance for the 1st semester. All of these students had zero tardies and zero absences. Keep up the good work!!!

Students in Mrs. Rogers' First Grade class are building Ice Castles. The students are applying all information they have learned about matter for the final experiment. The students are using thier prior knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to create the tallest Ice Castle. The students are also using the clock to keep track of how long it takes for the Ice Castle to melt. Pictured here are Colton S., Alexia T. and Landon A.

Pancakes Second graders in Mrs. Vitullo's room at J.R. Irvin made pancakes to show a chemical change. Destiny F. enjoys flipping the pancakes.

All-city choir The Midlothian All-City Choir performed Friday, December 11th at Midlothian High School. The choirs (including Jr. High and High School) debuted a commissioned piece, "Angels' Gloria" by Laura Farnell. Ms. Farnell was the guest director.

Candy Cane Measuring Bella S. has fun measuring to see how many candy canes tall Savanna D. is in Ms. Warren's kindergarten class. They measured each other with large and small candy canes. It was a fun Christmas math activity.

Moon Cookies Mr. Moore's 5th grade science classes are studying the phases of the moon. The students used cookies to replicate the difference phases of the moon. Kayla B. shows off her completed work.

Our First grade students are learning about Holidays Around the World. On Tuesday, we visited Sweden and experienced the light parade throughout the school. St. Lucia is the oldest girl in the family and she wears a wreath of candles on her head. She is also dressed in white with a red sash around her waist. The parade of light welcomes the holiday season. Our first graders enjoyed learning about Sweden.

Holiday Program The 3rd and 4th graders performed their Holiday Program, 2009 for the student body.

RISE Readers Mrs. Embry congratulates Marilyn J., Joshua V., Jaclyn H., Colton L., and Barrett H. for their super reading in RISE.

Fundraiser winners The Irvin PTV held a successful fundraiser. These Irvin students were top sellers in their classes and won a drawing for prizes.

J. R. Irvin Student Council sponsored "Chick-fil-a Night" at the Waxahachie location to raise money for Student Council. Mrs. Embry lead the Cuban shuffle with those students who were able to attend "Chick-fil-a Night".


Author visit The authors of R Time, Pete Harvey and Greg Sampson, came to Irvin Elementary on November 12. Pete and Greg came from England to observe R time in practice in our classrooms. Here is Mr. Pete in Mrs. Foster's 5th grade classroom. He presented the class with a flag from his country following a question and anwer time. Irvin was one of four schools they visited in the Metroplex. We were thrilled to welcome them to Irvin Elementary!!

Circuits Macy T., Rachel F., Mason J. and Dakota S. enjoyed learning about and creating series and parallel circuits in Mr. Moore's science class.

Author Pic J. R. Irvin's fourth grade received a special visit from two well-known published authors, RC Waggoner and Alexandra Powe-Allred. The fourth graders are entering a Creative Writing Contest held by Mr. Waggoner. Both authors came to encourage and motivate the students to become stronger writers by sharing their own personal experiences. In this picture, Mrs. Allred is reenacting her experience as an Olympic Bobsledder.

During their study of rocks and fossils, 2nd graders at Irvin Elementary became paleontologists for the day. They were excavating chocolate chips from a cookie using a toothpick.

Bravo Music Mrs. Dunegan's 3rd Grade Class received the Music BRAVO award for being the first class to earn 75 points this school year. Classes can receive 5 points each time they come to Music Class if all of the classroom rules are followed. Mrs. Vitullo's second grade class read the book Hedgehog Bakes a Cake. The class discussed how to make a cake and compared their list of ingredients to those in the book. With the help of Sheree Hart, the students used math skills to measure ingredients, learned that ingredients are added in a certain order and that both dry and liquid ingredients are necessary to make a cake. Once the cupcakes were done, Elijah L., Kaylee H., Alivia W., Marcus M., and Alexandria M. were able to frost and decorate them.

Teeny Tiny First grade classes participated in "Teeny, Tiny Day". The day began with the students (and teachers) entering their classroom through a teeny, tiny door. The students also played games with teeny, tiny dice. The fun continued all through the day.

CPS meets Miley Recently, Mrs. McDaniel and some team members of the Community Problem Solving Team were awarded the opportunity to attend the Miley Cyrus concert in Dallas. They were given this opportunity by an organization called YSA (Youth Service America) because they earned a grant for their community service. Miley Cyrus has teamed up with YSA to promote youth doing community service in their towns. They got to meet Miley Cyrus backstage and had the opportunity to talk with her and tell about their service, both past and present! Top Performers Congratulations to 4th Graders Chaney S.- Spelling Star, Brayden N. - Mad Scientist and Devin R. - Math Geek of the Week for working hard this week and making the highest grade in those subjects.

Dunegan J.R. Irvin students Katie & Floyd challenged their teacher, Mrs. Dunegan at the diabetes walk. The challenge was to see who could run the longest without stopping. Both students were fierce competitors. Floyd even made it 2 miles! Great job for both of them!

Green's Owls Mrs. Green's 1st grade class are studying nocturnal animals. Look at all the colorful owls in their classroom!

Golden Visit Mrs. Golden's husband, Justin Golden, an Arlington Firefighter/Paramedic, visited our fourth grade classrooms to enhance their knowledge on fire safety. Our fourth graders read the story, Fire!, from their literature book to promote Fire Safety Week.

J.R. Irvin Kindergartners had a special "Family Project" to complete for our Transportation Unit. The students were given either a sheet of paper to make a plane or a sheet of foil to make a boat. They had a week to complete their plane or boat with their family. Last Friday, we took turns flying our planes by class to see whose plane flew the farthest. The boats were tested to see which boat held the most pennies. We had fun watching our planes soar and our boats hold a lot of pennies!!

Heart of Irvin - Fields Debbie Fields is selected as the first recipient of the "Heart of Irvin" award! This goes to the teacher or staff member on the campus that exemplifies servant leadership, kindness, caring for others, and love of job. Mrs. Field's co-workers describe her as a person that is willing to do whatever is asked; is always smiling; is courageous; always approachable; goes out of her way to help. These are just a few of the wonderful ways to describe her! Woo Hoo Mrs. Fields! Congratulations!

Rock Study The first grade geologists from Mrs. Rogers' class in this picture are Alexis B. and Landon A. They are looking at the rocks they brought from home with a magnifying glass and reporting what they see in their rock journals.

Rock Work Mr. Pollard's class show off their Sedimentary Rocks and volcanoes which they made during their study of "Rocks"! They formed Sedimentary Rocks by lots of pressure and heat (sitting on them).

Music and Art Mrs. Applegate (music) and Ms. Cooper (art) combined activities relating to "The Little Old Lady That Swallowed a Fly". The students learned the song in music class and made a mural during art. First grade students Thomas J. and Heaven C. were some of the first to add their "animals" to the little old lady that swallowed a fly in the hallway.

Lasso Irvin 3rd grade cowgirls are supporting the panthers' quest to lasso the yellowjackets on Friday night!

Light test Fifth grade students are learning about electricity. In their lab, they built closed circuits making flashlights in Mr. Moore's science class.

Mural Design Marilyn J., Alexia T. and Kylie K. in Ms. Cooper's art class are working together to create a mural for the hallway. The mural will be the old lady from the story, "The Old Lady That Swallowed a Fly." The students were creating different patterns to decorate the old lady's dress.

Embry Birthday Mrs. Embry celebrates her birthday with Madelyn F., Cole T., Colton H. and Lucas V.

Embry Dance Mrs. Embry joins in a dance with students who have participated in the fundraiser.

Motor Skills Hannah M. builds her fine motor skills at a center while Titus L. and Marcus M. finish their classroom assignments in Mrs. Vitullo's class.

9/11 Performance 3rd graders at Irvin Elementary paid tribute to the victims & heroes of 9/11 with an outstanding performance of patriotic songs & speeches. The students performed for their parents & the school.
